- Five Senses at BLT Steak Aruba
An incredible sunset welcomed that Friday night when local titans joined forces: the team from BLT Steak at The Ritz‑Carlton Aruba and Divino representing Caymus Vineyards brought us one of the most memorable evenings of the season with one wine pairing dinner featuring Wagyu beef as the main star. The front of house was full of known faces of the culinary scene of the island, all eager to enjoy a night out… we all have been wanting for so long to be out with friends again and oh the joy of having one of the famous Popovers (a cheesy bread unique from BLT Steak) in front of me. Spectacular creations by the masters at work Mitch Pereira and Rafael López Aliaga started coming out like the Scallop crudo with some gem‑looking pomegranate seeds on top followed by what was my first taste of the famous beef with the Wagyu roll… buttery and tender, like… WOW! They did not spare any creativity to produce this menu, doing a twist on the peruvian Anticuchos and a Wagyu Katsu Sando: of all things you could imagine doing with this fancy beef, chef Mitch created a sandwich! Something you wish you could have on any given Sunday while watching your favorite show. Brilliant! But of course they had to present this delicacy cut at its finest… on a strip au jus with butternut squash purée topped with crispy shallots. To finish the night con broche de oro ‑literally, they put gold leaf on top‑ a fantastic sea salted chocolate mousse that seemed like it came out from your wildest dreams. Vino flowed all night with a pairing that was nothing but estellar thanks to Kiume Tjon‑A‑Tsien from Divino. Stay pending for more culinary events by The Ritz-Carlton Aruba! They don't disappoint. - Discovering Infini
Infini has been the talk of the town since its opening and I couldn't wait to have the opportunity to see what was all the hype about. Eating from a golden spoon My biggest respects to Chef Urvin Croes for creating this incredible space, particularly mid global pandemic, bold move I must say but when you trust your craft and put together such team of people you know the time must be right. The infini experience is about eight courses, each of them celebrating a special ingredient as a star and complementing it with others that can come from diverse corners of the world or his own island, Aruba. The logistics that should have been to fly in Langoustines from Holland, King Crab from Alaska or Cobia from Panama, sure it has a good story to tell, showing the lengths Chef Urvin is willing to go to achieve his creations. I could go on and on and on to tell you every detail of each dish we tasted but the biggest hit is the performance the Infini team puts on every service, mind you, being seated in front of the kitchen where you can witness every detail put together, like watching a timelapse of those mega skyscrapers being built, is just fascinating... all in perfect order, everyone knows exactly what to do and when. If I were you I would indulge into getting beverage pairing of wines from all regions of the world, I.P.A Beer and a Gin and St. Germain cocktail will enhance the evening and the flavors for sure. No need to be a connoisseur to be able to enjoy your Infini dinner, there will be a member of the team coming to you to tell you all about it and answer all the questions. "Excellence and no less" I said to Urvin and Jessica at the end of the night, for me one of those things everyone must experience in their lifetime. For reservations visit Infini
- Chef's Classics at BLT Steak, The Ritz-Carlton Aruba
If you are planning a getaway to Aruba and are looking for restaurant recommendations, BLT Steak at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba should be at the top of your list. I was invited to sample the Chef’s Classics menu. (Originally published on Destination Magazines, December 2019) Dining out is even more exciting when trying a restaurant for the first time… It was an occasion for me to visit BLT Steak at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba to taste the Chef’s Classics menu for two, their latest promotion… That night I arrived earlier to sit by the bar and have one of their famous cocktails. Well known mixologist, Legino Stomp suggested I try the “Mandarin Martini”, a delicious citrus mix, strong enough to kill a horse; and the Arashi Punch, great on flavor and beautifully presented with a bright pink flower. We enjoyed a chat by the bar to get in the mood and open our appetite… We headed to our table and had the kindest server, Sabrina Carrillo… She walked us through the menu and explained the concept. The menu was curated to have a taste of the quintessential BLT Steak dishes. Chef Luis Duarte, a very cool gentleman greeted us and suggest his favorites, as well. He even sent out some special treats to celebrate our first time at BLT Steak. He ensured we had the fullest experience, and oh yes, we did! We first welcomed the BLT’s signature Popovers. This rustic looking bread is made with gruyere cheese. I know, who doesn’t love bread? But this is something else. I could dine here just to eat this bread with a glass of wine. Fun fact: the popovers come with the recipe! I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make it at home. The tuna tartare was brought to our table and the presentation is simply amazing. The soy lime sauce was a unique touch for this chilled tuna served on top of an ice bed. Then a massive crab cake made its way to our table! It was very tasty with great presentation. These folks at BLT really present everything so nice. The Caesar Salad, part of the Chef’s Classics menu, is a classic caesar a la BLT. Dressing lightly added and on top of parmesan bread, a cool and tasty touch. Beets Salad, my favorite of the night, cooked to perfection, mixed with chunks of Gorgonzola and walnuts. It was gone in a second. We all raved about it. Chef’s Classics menu gave us three options for the main course, a 5 OZ Filet Mignon with shrimp, the Hanger Steak “Hunter Style” and Salt Brick Chicken. By recommendation of Chef Duarte we picked the filet and the Hanger… A glass of Cabernet was poured immediately. The Filet Mignon is your classic Steakhouse dish, prime USDA Angus beef cooked to your liking, served with grilled shrimp and their famous Maitre D’ butter; mixed with thyme, shallots, and garlic. A classic dish made special. The Hanger Steak was a really saucy dish! Homemade “Hunter Style” sauce made with diced tomatoes, bacon, mushrooms and scallions. It was a generous portion that could satisfy even the biggest appetite. BLT Steak also serves unique fries. Sabrina told us that they import these to Aruba from a special source so you really get to have a unique taste and experience! Woah! The clock struck dessert time and the Chef’s Classics menu offers a very unique shareable dessert: DONUTS! Who doesn’t love donuts? Plus, it’s the only place in Aruba I’ve found donuts on the menu. And they were incredible, served with melted chocolate and coffee ice cream. We were almost in a food coma, but BLT’s Aruban pastry chef, Andrea Croeze, did not want us to leave without having her most famed creation, CRÊPE SOUFFLÉ; and honestly, I am glad she did. This fluffy beauty may be overwhelming at first glance, but it is so lightweight and delicious. It might be the best dessert I’ve had in my life. We couldn’t stop giving her our compliments! It is a soufflé folded as a crêpe and served with passion fruit sauce, a gem! And BLT Steak has the nicest touches. They even send every table this “thank you” made of chocolate with some brownie bites. After this feast, I won’t have enough words of encouragement to give you to come and try BLT Steak at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba. Indulge yourself on, what was for us, an unforgettable dining experience. Make sure to like The Ritz-Carlton facebook page and stay pending for more special events and offers at BLT Steak. - An evening with Tommasi wines at Casa Nonna New York
Aruba may be small in size, 75 square miles to be exact, but its culinary offering is mighty! As a Caribbean foodie hot spot, there are regular special restaurant events on – none better than a recent evening with Tommasi wines presented by Tropical Bottling Company at Casa Nonna New York. I was invited to the wine tasting supper. Here in Aruba, we have a fun tradition called it Kibra Siman. It basically consists of doing something fun on Wednesdays to have a break from the routine and to give us that extra push to make it to the weekend. It can be going out for a drink or to indulge in something, just for fun. We love it! The Ritz-Carlton Aruba, in partnership with Tropical Bottling and Tommasi Wines, gave us the perfect way to kibra siman! Scents of Taste, a culinary event hosted at Casa Nonna NY, where we gathered for a packed house that night! My expectations were surpassed as soon as we arrived. We were welcomed with a fresh mojito at the Bacardi station right at the entrance. Then we took a look at some luxurious goods by Montblanc at a pop-up they placed in the entrance of the restaurant. I could tell the Ritz-Carlton’s team was committed to stimulating all of our senses! Now, let me tell you about the food and wine! Dish: Parmesan | wine pairing: Filodora Prosecco DOC Tommasi Parmesan cheese is a blessing in itself, but in this mousse interpretation, it was just sublime! That note of olive oil let us know that we were in good hands for the night. Who knew a cheesy mousse could be so great? The wine pairing was crisp and fruity. I just love prosecco so that will always be a ‘yes’ for me! Just look at this picture! Dish: Heirloom tomato carpaccio | wine pairing: Le Rosse Pinot Grigio IGT delle Venezie Heirloom tomatoes were a first for me in this carpaccio. With a very interesting appearance and texture along with strawberries, citrus segments, asparagus and a pomegranate dressing. This dish was a wild display of colors and flavors! The wine had a smooth taste with a little citrus. Dish: Cured Italian Salumi | WINE PAIRING: Rompicollo Rosso Toscana IGT Charcuterie boards are one of my favorite things. When this one was served, immediately knew I was in the right place. Just look at that presentation! It had 3 types of cured meats: Prosciutto di Parma, 3 months aged Coppa, and Salami Finocciona. Truly a gift! Vino tinto, of course, was perfectly paired. Dish: Shrimp Ravioli | wine pairing: Ripasso Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC Shrimp and ravioli together is a match made in heaven and served with the Casa Nonna signature tomato sauce… just unreal! With crispy polenta on the side, it was Italian at its best. The wine really lives up to its great reputation. A vibrant dark red with cherry and vanilla notes. Dish: Veal & Wild Mushroom Risotto | wine pairing: Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG Another work of art in presentation and taste. A different risotto with wild mushrooms –which, by itself sounds exciting– with veal loin, topped with the best wine sauce I’ve ever tasted, and some pecorino flakes. Glorious! I am an aficionado of intense red wine and this Amarone is such a great one! Lots of dark fruits, oak, and tobacco flavors. Dish: Cassata Siciliana | paired with: Espresso Martini If I’m out for dinner, you can bet I won’t skip dessert–and I won’t share either! This dessert was, honestly, so memorable because it reminded me of my childhood, specifically, the nougat we would eat at my grandma’s home during the holidays. It was really special. I had to give the chef an A+ for that presentation, the flower was such a nice touch. To end the evening, we had an espresso martini, which was delightfully unexpected and very much appreciated… so I had two! Casa Nonna truly is the gift that keeps on giving. One course after another continued to blow our minds, not only in flavor, but the well-thought choices they made along with the presentation. Next time, count me in! It never disappoints. A huge thanks to the Ritz-Carlton Team, especially Yahira Santoni, who was a great table mate, my friend Dave Troeger for the incredible pictures, and all the Casa Nonna NY Team for the invite. - Winemaker dinner at The Chophouse, Manchebo Aruba
The Chophouse at Manchebo has partnered with La Scolca to bring the finest Italian wines to Aruba. Last month the gourmet restaurant held a winemaker dinner, offering foodies the chance to sample their range of delicious vino. I was invited to the event to try the vintages and learn how the world-renowned importer TEC established the collaboration. (Originally published on Destination Magazines September 2019) I have always been fascinated by the art of winemaking and finding out that Manchebo was organizing a winemaker dinner made me curious about the experience that night would bring. Sun was setting that Thursday, my friend (and photography extraordinaire) David Troeger and I arrived at the Manchebo Resort lobby where the staff arranged a welcome moment, handing glasses of Gambino prosecco, perfect to refresh after these warm August afternoons. Having a friend there who can give me a different input was key and fun. Maybe that’s a recipe for a good life: friends, food, and wine. The Chophouse can be described as a fine dining restaurant, where a well put together front of house, white tables, shining glassware and steel cutlery make a splendid display. Once inside, TEC’s Sommelier Kavey Yarzagaray formally welcomed us and explained how this occasion came about, which is a really fun story. While in Orlando at a wine trade show, he met Chiara Soldati, from La Scolca winery and his interest to bring their wines to Aruba was born. Ms. Soldati had planned a vacation in Aruba, staying at The Manchebo Beach Resort, and they agreed that it was the perfect chance to organize something to introduce the winery to foodies and wine lovers. A gift came to our table, a Salmon Nigiri from Omakase, the sushi bar inside The Chophouse. The perfect fresh bite to kick things off. Dish: Scallops | Wine pairing: La Scolca Gavi Scallops make the world a better place and this combination with couscous and red beet puree is work of a mastermind. Dish: Halibut | Wine pairing: Scolca Gavi dei Gavi Black Label Picture this, generous Halibut filet on top of the most glorious red pepper sauce… it was the favorite of all our table. Some asparagus served as base and a silky cauliflower puree was on the side. All the flavors complemented each other very nicely. Dish: Sirloin au Jus | Wine pairing: Daou Cabernet Sauvignon California I’d never had anything prepared sous vide before and now I understand the hype from meat lovers. I don’t think I can compare the tenderness and juiciness to anything else. It was served with onions, bacon, and mushrooms. What a great dish. The wine was wildly acclaimed by all my table mates, bold red, heavy upfront and smooth finish. Dish: Sorbet dessert Simple things will always win me over. This time the chef came up with what I could describe as a “walk through the freshest selection of forest berries and flowers” to encounter a La Scolca wine sorbet in the center. Just look at it! To end the night Ms. Soldati came over to our table to humbly introduce herself and tell us stories about the wines and how they are appreciated all over the world. We left feeling lucky and grateful to be able to have made these memories. Thank you Manchebo Resort and the chef Sandro Herold for this treat! Until the next time. - The taste of Italy comes to The Ritz-Carlton Aruba
This summer Casa Nonna NY at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba takes food lovers on a genuine trip to the most emblematic corners of Italy with a 4-course menu inspired by Sicily. I got the chance to visit Italy for the night. (Originally posted on Destination Magazines on August, 2019) I went to Italy for a Night and you can go too! Casa Nonna NY at The Ritz-Carlton Aruba is offering an incredible experience of going to “Italy for a Night”. Curating a menu with a selection of dishes and wine pairings focused on certain regions of Italy to make you go on a culinary trip, discover new flavors and maybe fall in love with your favorites again. I wondered what could be my findings there… this time we went to Sicilia. It was my visit to Casa Nonna NY and when you enter I couldn’t help but be impressed with how beautiful the place is. Elegant interiors with velvet booth chairs, lavish wallpaper and an outdoor sitting area with a priceless sunset view, made the experience even greater. We started the night with my all-time favorite Aperol Spritz and a focaccia while we chatted about the menu and admired our surroundings. Also, there was live music playing in front of us! They really know how to set the tone for a nice evening. Antipasto: Arancini con carne di Vitello | Wine pairing: Planeta Chardonnay 2017 from Sicily Our trip to Sicilia began with crispy risotto balls served over cherry tomatoes and veal sauce – out of this world. I would love to master a tomato sauce like this one. The risotto balls were creamy and soft to taste. The wine pairing was a strong glass of Chardonnay from Sicily, bold with aromas of citrus, oak and butter – long fantastic finish. Primi: Lasagne Verde | Wine pairing: Stemmari Nero d’Avola 2016 from Sicily Lasagna is one of my favorite dishes and I was eager to try this variation with Basil pasta. I’ve gotta say it was one of the best I’ve ever had. Great balance of cream and veal sauce, between layers of homemade Basil pasta, it really deserves a medal. Who doesn’t have a heavy hand with the Parmigiano on top of any pasta but this time… I didn’t add a single thing. The wine, a smooth red that went perfectly with the cheese and sauce. Secondi: Tonno Scottato con Couscous | Wine Pairing: Etna Rosso 2016 An Italian menu can’t be complete without a good fish. The chefs at Casa Nonna, crafted this Tuna dish, medium done with a sauce similar to the Putanesca on top of a generous portion of couscous with hints of saffron, all delicious and beautifully served. The wine, a true treat made of Nerello Mascalese grapes, light ruby color, light body with berries taste and a firm finish. Dolci: Cannoli | Wine pairing: La Roncaia Picolit A good Cannoli is not easy to master and I am glad to know Casa Nonna is the place to come and indulge in one! Crispy perfection filled with ricotta and pistachios on both endings, over a bed of berries and strawberry compote all aromatized with Meyer lemon was the best way to end this trip to Sicily. The wine pairing, a deep golden glass of Picolit was highly appreciated. We left Casa Nonna feeling grateful, it’s not just about amazing food, you really feel the heart that is behind these dishes and how well put together this menu was. The service, no less than impeccable. There are not enough words of encouragement from me to you to try Casa Nonna and take a trip to Italy for a night! I certainly want to go back very soon. - The Caribbean’s largest Michelin star pop-up restaurant opens in Aruba
The Caribbean’s largest Michelin star pop-up restaurant opened its doors last month at Windows on Aruba for two nights. Four internationally acclaimed Michelin-starred chefs from the Netherlands joined forces to create an “8-star” spectacular dining experience. (Original post for Destination Magazines on July 2, 2019). The Michelin star line up included chefs François Geurds of FG Restaurant ** and FG Food Labs *, Erik Van Loo of Parkheuvel **, Edwin Vinke of De Kromme Watergang ** and Jermain de Rozario of De Rozario *. Our Aruban Online Contributor, Enrique Balestrini (@enriquebalestrini) attended this special event and reports on the culinary delights on offer! Windows on Aruba, beaming over the 9 hole golf course at Divi Village Golf & Beach Resort for the first night of the event When I found out Divi Resorts was bringing a Michelin Star Pop-Up Dinner Event to Aruba, I was thrilled, to say the least. Every time I watch Chef’s Table I can’t stop dreaming about getting to experience what it’s like to taste one of those award-winning dishes; especially knowing that these guys were coming to the island with 8 stars under their belts. The event buzz rose like foam and quickly the tickets were the most coveted thing. “Sold out”, I heard. And I was bummed to miss out, but the Divi team, Marrit, and Dominique, made sure to organize a third chance. Partners, international press, and house friends gathered at Windows on Aruba, one day before the big opening night, for an afternoon journey at the hands of François Geurds, Edwin Vinke, Erik, and Juliën van Loo and Jermain de Rozario, the men in charge of this memorable day. The front of house looked pristine, I could really feel the excitement of the guests gathered there, ready to embrace the experience to the full extent. A glass of sparkling wine served, and we were off to a good start. I can only describe these dishes as I felt them, just because they really made us feel so much. Let’s start with the appetizers. The “Oyster Margarita”, was the perfect fresh start with a kick. I asked, “What was that extra flavor?” I know it as “merkén,” smoked red hot chili peppers, a staple in Chilean cuisine. It was a completely unexpected surprise brought to the table by Edwin Vinke, the coolest guy you can imagine, awarded with two Michelin Stars at his own restaurant De Kromme Watergang. That spicy touch comes from a guy like him. Oyster Margarita | Edwind Vinke Instagram The “Crackling Duck Liver” followed, a creation of François Geurds. Organic foie gras with green peas cream, watercress, and buckwheat. A tiny terrarium that turned into explosions of flavor in the mouth. The creation of a scientist, perhaps? This chef opened the first culinary lab in the Netherlands and holds three Michelin stars. Onto the “Bommeriger Pig,” brought to us by Erik van Loo and his son, Juliën. Situated on a traditionally Dutch-made piece of pork belly, a dollop creme fraiche & truffle tapenade. It helped me understand why sometimes in the culinary field, what matters most is the perfection of ingredients and that elegance lies in simplicity. Having ventured to a few Indonesian restaurants on the island, the “Gado Gado” was something familiar. Figure this amuse, an Indonesian salad with the punch of the peanut and soy. Chef Germain de Rozario, bases his menu at The Rozario (*) on film, music, love, and friendship. You understand the story behind this dish, playing with feelings and taste. The “Black Beauty” by François Geurds stole the show, arriving at our table looking like a black planet. Little did we know, the treasure hidden inside: 3-hour barbecued celeriac root with 43 secret herbs & spices vinaigrette. I never imagined a vegetarian dish would make it to my all-time top 5, but this took the crown! Edwin Vinke strikes again with a surprise, “Codfish en papillote”. I loved that we were handed scissors to cut open the cover and how we were instructed to pour the “tom kha” (a spicy coconut milk soup) over the fish inside. I personally like the steps you have to take before eating, they make the experience more engaging. ‘Gotta say, the Codfish was out of this world! For our third starter, we had the “Stoba FG Style”. Chef François dug into his Aruban roots with this sweet crispy succade cut, accompanied by a sereh foam and beef gravy. It felt like a Sunday dinner at mom’s house. The wine pairing was spot on, a good glass of “Alexander vs. The Ham Factory” with a red fruity entrance. The time has come for our entrée, the Dutch Lamb, masterfully prepared by Erik’s van Loo son, Juliën. Accompanied by two white asparagus alongside that intense black garlic paste and notes of spices. The chef played the duality of the strong and soft sides to make this one the main course. Dessert can be a huge challenge at an event like this but Chef Rozario knocked it out of the park, by embracing an island vibe with this coconut cream paired with mango ice cream, pineapple and an authentic touch of papaya that made it interesting and light. It just felt perfect for Aruba. We are only in June and dare I state, this was the culinary event of the year. I’ve always wondered what this experience would hold. And judging by the standing ovation the chefs received, it’s safe to say I wasn’t the only one who left thoroughly impressed. The up-close and personal experience and personality each dish delivered, made us understand why these talented experts were awarded such an honor – the Michelin Star. Special thanks to Lynn and Nicole for the impeccable service. All smiles after the service at Windows on Aruba. Outfit: Tommy Hilfiger | Sunglasses: Salvatore Ferragamo by KOK Optica | Location: The Ritz Carlton Aruba | Photo by David Troeger The Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino L.G. Smith Boulevard 101, Palm Beach | +297 586 9000 | marriott.com For many locals, the Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino is a familiar spot. It a usual place where we go to meet friends for coffee or to treat ourselves to breakfast or dinner. Its immense property offers so many beautiful areas and features often as the backdrop for photo shoots. It was my first time as a guest and from the moment I stepped out of my car I was greeted by friendly staff who helped me with my bags and check-in. The whole check-in process was a true demonstration of hospitality and professionalism. In order to be able to write about this experience, the Marriott team offered me a stay in their Governor’s suite. Located on their 6th floor, the suite offers a spacious living room and a master bedroom fit for a king. The suite features two bathrooms (helpful if you receive any guests during your stay), each one fully equipped with the most lavish tangerine scented toiletries – the perfect choice to suit all tastes. Depending on your plans, the resort has everything to make you feel complete. An athletic club if you don’t want to miss your daily workout, restaurants, an adult pool if you want to enjoy a quieter tanning session and even a Starbucks coffee shop located in the lobby if you want to enjoy your daily cup o’ joe. Let’s not forget the resort’s prime location on Palm Beach! Let me assure you, you’ll enjoy the most beautiful white sand and turquoise water beach under their own palapas conveniently located just a few steps from the main building. Outfit: Vilebrequin | Location: Marriott Resort | Styled by Ali Hector | Photo by Isaiah Stomp Their culinary offering is beyond amazing, usually they host different chefs from around the world to create unique experiences and the restaurants located in the resort will have your hands full of options for any time of the day. The best word to describe the Marriott experience is complete. I have no doubt you’ll enjoy the stay as much as I did if you choose the resort as your next accommodation when you travel to Aruba and if you’re local and you decide to indulge yourself to a weekend there, I’m sure you’ll leave renovated and with a smile on your face. The ambiance is classy and will keep you in the vibe with live talent. Their cocktail menu is wide and they have one of the best sushi bars on the island. Whatever you’re in the mood for, they have it. Personally, I had one of the best Manhattans I can remember. It is the perfect place to start your night. No matter if you’re local or visiting the island, you can’t say no to a dinner by the beach. Atardi’s staff were incredibly attentive and that’s something you can always be thankful for. The menu is extensive, they have something for everyone and I was surprised at how rich some dishes were. I started with a Lobster Salad which featured an incredible touch of spice with Pica di Papaya. It was superb and fresh, perfect to open my appetite for the main course. I had the Filet and Lobster that came with butter sauce, all paired with a perfect Malbec recommended by our waiter. Can’t-miss dessert time and since I was celebrating my friend, Eva’s birthday, we had two great ones. The first called “Coconut Paradise”, a rich vanilla cake with white chocolate filling and shredded coconut. The second, “Romeo’s Memories” was a matcha alfajor with dulce de leche and green matcha creme anglaise. The entire meal was first-rate and we are already planning our next visit to Atardi! Models: Marksonn Maduro & Andrea Bravo | Location: Atardi Marriott Resort | Styled by Ali Hector | Photo by David Troeger Breakfast at La Vista Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day – I’ve always thought it to be the first step to a great day! La Vista is known to be a local favorite because it offers a diverse menu and above all a nice ambiance that doesn’t make you feel like you’re in a food court. Whenever I’m in the mood for a sweet breakfast, La Vista is my go-to place. They have the best waffles and pastries. Don’t think I skipped the omelette. They have an omelette station where you can make it to your taste with tons of ingredients and different cheeses. The options are endless and props to them for that freshly brewed black coffee that I appreciated so much to get my morning started. Room Service It never rains in Aruba they say but we as residents consider it a blessing and a pleasant change to hotter days. On one of my nights at the Marriott it poured and it was the perfect recipe for a night in and room service. In no time I had at my door the cheesiest Pepperoni Pizza, one word: insane. Along with a Fish sandwich that had the most generous and fresh Mahi Mahi fillet on top of a sweet bun, with a side of the crispiest french fries that felt like they were made one minute ago. If you ever had a bad experience with room service, let me tell you the Marriott is the place to change that. Give it a try! Brunch at La Vista Our last day at Marriott was a real treat. Brunch at La Vista surprised me by being a social occasion for locals, full of familiar faces dressed nicely and in the spirit for indulging. Breakfast and brunch at La Vista are two different experiences. The outdoor BBQ, combined with a fresh paella and Mexican section gives you the desire to try it all. Inside they have a fresh seafood area with oysters, ceviche and shrimps next to an incredible salad bar with everything your wildest salad dreams are made of. Freshly baked pizzas and bruschettas, fruits and the most amazing dessert section… I could write pages. Did I mention bottomless mimosas? Sunday funday! Am I right? Gelato & Co. When the social media buzz began and we found out that a new authentic Gelato place was coming to open a shop in the lobby of Marriott, we didn’t know we needed it so much. Gelato & Co. comes from the Cayman Islands and offers authentic Italian gelato with absolutely nothing artificial. It’s all natural flavors are made from the highest quality ingredients and you can tell! For those with special dietary needs, the sorbets are vegan, completely fat and dairy free. In my honest opinion, best gelato on the island! Divi Resorts Divi Resorts | +1 800-367-3484 | diviresorts.com Divi offered me a second home in Aruba, that’s the feeling you get when you check in and head to discover your room. Swimshorts: Tommy Hilfiger | Location: Tamarijn Beach | Photo by Yerica Benitez Now, let’s talk about what the resort has to offer. Across the property, you can find 13 restaurants and 11 bars. Also, they offer nighttime entertainment, a fitness center with a climbing wall, their famous 9 hole golf course, tennis courts…just to name a few! However, to me, the best part is the privileged location right across one of my favorite beaches, Tamarijn Beach. The resort is immense and beautiful, full of nature and with endless possibilities, for sure your stay will be a memorable one! Outfit: Tommy Hilfiger | Location: Divi Village Golf and Beach Resort | Photo by Isaiah Stomp Windows on Aruba Restaurant Good things in life take time to get to you, that was my explanation about why I had never been to Windows on Aruba before. Entering such a stunning place for the first time for sure will never leave your mind. Classic Jazz playing in the background at the perfect volume and such feeling of privacy and elegance. I must say it was a fortune being served by Lynn who made my night even more joyful with her smile, explaining the menu and letting me know her top recommendations based on my preferences and mood. We ordered the Tuna Tataki and the Escargot and Shrimp with Pernod sauce, the perfect way to start the night with fresh notes. The main course arrived and by Lynn’s recommendation, I ordered the Dover Sole fish which was a true indulgence skillfully filleted before my eyes, accompanied by spinach risotto. Dessert was glorious too. I must say I felt greatly impressed by the privacy, quietness, elegance and overall quality. By far the finest dining in Aruba. Outfit: Tommy Hilfiger | Location: Windows on Aruba | Photo by Yerica Benitez During my stay at Divi Links, Golf & Beach Resort I was lucky enough to visit Windows on Aruba for brunch too. Who can say “no” to endless mimosas? That’s an easy way to get you out of bed in the morning, but the truth is that now I understand why it is the best-voted brunch on Aruba. Live music ambiance, sophistication and a fantastic view of the Divi golf course. It would make this review endless if I described all of the dishes on offer, but my highlights include the fantastic cheese platter that welcomes you at the table, the pulled pork benedict egg that tasted like Christmas, the Thai coconut mussels and the crepes a la mode. Again, Windows on Aruba blows my mind and expectations. Eat + Drink The Best Bars and Restaurants on Aruba Having a good culinary experience can make or break your vacation, that’s why I want to tell you about some of the greatest places to eat on One Happy Island. What’s more, your vacation deserves a toast! Do it in the best places on Aruba. Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse L.G. Smith Blvd 101, Noord | +297 520 6600 | ruthschris.com We are undeniably lucky to have a Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in Aruba, legends since 1960. I am always happy to be back and it has been a while, now it is renewed and looks better than ever. Whenever you visit Ruth’s Chris give yourself the luxury of time to enjoy at a slow pace. Started the night with a catch-up conversation alongside a Black Cherry Martini and that went down smoothly, a sign of a good mixologist behind the bar. The appetizers menu does not disappoint and we had in no time a Crabtini, yes! Delicious crab meat served in a chilled martini glass and also the spicy lobster, lobster bites with a spicy cream sauce. Our appetite awoke and it was time to order the main courses. By recommendation of our incredible waiter, we all ordered the Ribeye, marbled cut that came sizzling at 500 degrees. Pro tip: order it bone-in! To be honest, Ruth’s Chris has my favorite side orders of all time, the sweet potato casserole, perfect compliment with a crunchy pecan crust. No dessert this time, celebrating our friend Chris’ belated birthday with a bottle (or two) of Veuve Clicquot. Dining at Ruth’s is always a night to remember. Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant L.G. Smith Blvd 82, Oranjestad | +297 280 1970 | lucysretiredsurfers.com I now have a new place to meet for lunch, dinner or drinks downtown Oranjestad. Lucy’s across from the Renaissance Mall is the perfect stop to beat the heat of the day and have a drink! Friends encouraged me to have their infamous scorpion shot, hoping it would give me superpowers I decided to give it a shot, pun intended! Model: Marksonn Maduro | Sunglasses: Tom Ford and Gucci by KOK Optica | Location: Lucy’s | Photo by David Troeger I heard wonders about their “Taco Tuesdays” but the rest of the menu is great too. Super delicious fish tacos, pulled pork sandwich, and crispy calamari were our favorites. The restaurant is fresh, pet-friendly and has a great view and service. Take a look at their gift shop too. Has vacation taken a toll on you? Maybe it’s time to visit the Pharmacist, but not the kind of pharmacist you think. Apotheek bar is the new place to be in town, ring the bell at the door to get access and take a look at the board for a cocktail that will cure your affliction. Then the magic happens at the bar where all the ingredients to your drink are in medicine bottles and Erlenmeyer flasks, I tell you it’s legit. I had the Watermelon Kick, vodka-based with that habanero syrup kick that goes to its name. Then I had the Blueberry lemon Martini, smooth and fresh, all served in vintage sturdy glasses. The place is all about premium, fresh ingredients and craftsmanship far from crowds, they encourage you to take your time and savor the moment, it’s an intimate experience. Give it a visit, maybe you need to try a few remedies to find your relief. When I needed shopping advice, only one person came to mind: Ali Hector (@zhuzhedbyali). Let me tell you about Ali… not only is she is a professional certified stylist, but she’s also an Aruban-born ray of sunshine. Whether you come to Aruba looking to experience the island’s retail scene and do some shopping, or if you’re a local who just needs a little guidance… Ali is your girl! On our shopping day, she arrived in her white blazer as if I called the fashion emergency line and she was my doctor! It was a blast! Smith Boulevard 82, Oranjestad | Hyatt Regency Aruba Resort J. E. Irausquin Boulevard 85, Oranjestad | +297-529-9920 | gandelman.net Gandelman is one of the oldest jewelry companies in the Caribbean. Founded in 1931 in Curacao as a dry cleaning business it is now well-known worldwide as a jewelry and watch company, how fascinating! They came to Aruba in 1981 to open their first shop and people thought they were crazy until the island became the place to be. Gandelman is a treat of experience, a world on their own. Admiring one of the best Rolex collections available and getting to know all they offer in Bulgari and David Yurman among others, I was bowled over by their exquisite range, customer care, and incredible expertise. Most of their brands have special Caribbean Duty-Free retail pricing which means they are 5-15% less expensive than in the U.S. There is also no sales tax, they take care of it. Do I need to say more? Cartier L.G. Smith Blvd 82, Oranjestad | +297 529 9984 | cartier.com Entering the Cartier boutique is like entering a piece of the Maison in our island. Founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, the brand became the ‘Jeweler of Kings, King of Jewelers’ title given by King Edward VII, I could say that was their first celebrity endorsement. The attentive staff, dressed to their special duty of helping you discover all of this heritage will receive you with open arms and will tell you fascinating stories behind their iconic pieces such as the Santos watch, originally commissioned by the pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont, to wear while piloting his air dirigible and making the wristwatch, uncommon at the time a classic among men. While having a glass of champagne we learned the story about the Juste un Clou, designed by Aldo Cipullo in 1971 inspired by the designer love for hardware, with the intention to be a standout piece and make the ordinary precious. Just a nail, wrapped around the wrist became one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry of all times. We could not leave without admiring the Love Bracelet. They call it a child of the 70s in New York that remains today as a timeless sign of passionate love. In the beginning, you weren’t allowed to buy a bracelet for yourself but time has changed and we live in a self-love era that abandoned this rule. Still, the design is so complex yet so simple that it is really hard to put it on by yourself so remains the gesture of being fixed in your wrist by a loved one. Tommy Hilfiger J.E. Irausquin Blvd 230, Noord | +297 586 1412 | global.tommy.com Located at Royal Plaza Mall downtown Oranjestad and at Paseo Herencia Mall, Tommy Hilfiger has always been present in our shopping landscape. The world-famous American style that Tommy Hilfiger offers us is full of classics and for sure you’ll find everything from clothing, accessories to the perfect beach towel, always needed in Aruba. Ali pointed out at their Tommyxflags collection, explained me the color palette that’s on trend right now and mentioned the importance of dressing in quality and investing in pieces that will last longer and fit you better with time. The experience of shopping at Tommy Hilfiger is living the American dream. Bula Surf Shop Royal Plaza Mall 112, Oranjestad | +297 583 8458 | bulasurfshop.com Located right at the top of the escalator at Royal Plaza Mall, Bula Surf Shop, founded in 2003, has always been the coolest place to go when you’re looking for originality. They have a well-curated selection of brands from around the world to fit the laid-back Aruban style. By Ali’s advice, you have to go there when shopping in Aruba. Bula has the coolest original merchandise that is not available anywhere else, not even online, it’s locally made and the best part is that has limited production. It all blew up when they put out the first “Dushi Yiu” (“very nice” as equivalent in English) t-shirt that was a local hype and since then they have been producing new designs. I consider their merch the coolest souvenir or gift. Vilebrequin Renaissance Resort, L.G Smith Boulevard 82, Oranjestad | vilebrequin.com If you’re on the hunt for the best swimwear, Vilebrequin it is! The brand from Saint Tropez was founded back in 1971 by Fred Prysquel, it’s full of timeless pieces and a rich range of colors and motifs. It has always been one of my favorites, now all over Instagram sported by top influencers and celebrities their famous turtle logo became a classic. Ali and I enjoyed navigating their last collection and picked pieces to match the resort vibes. I promise you it’s worth the investment, the swim shorts last forever. Cosecha Zoutmanstraat 1, Oranjestad | +297 587 8709 | arubacosecha.com Ali’s expertise is always important, not only in the style section but also she’ll make sure to incorporate the local touch, the culture, the Aruban art and craft. That’s why she took me to Cosecha, translated to “harvesting”, a space full of Aruban craft heritage and artistic supply of artisans, located conveniently in town housed in a beautiful traditional yellow building. Everything you’ll find here is authentic and has the SEYO certification, which is the national seal of craftsmanship, so you know you’re taking home the real deal! KOK Optica Wilhelminastraat 11 Oranjestad | +297 583 7237 | kokoptica.com What is a look in Aruba without a killer pair of sunglasses? If you’re thinking you need an upgrade in the eyewear department, KOK Optica has everything you need. Five stores around the island display a beautifully curated collection of high-end brands for you to choose from. Ideally, for Aruba, the fact of being part of the Dutch Antilles makes KOK Optica special because they can carry collections only made for the European market which probably make your sunglass shopping trip a treasure find. Impossible to miss them while shopping downtown because they are located in two beautifully restored “cunucu” houses, honoring the Aruban heritage. Ali’s Picks were black chunky Tom Ford sunglasses and a more futuristic Dior Homme pair in blue, my favorite color! Shirt: Tommy Hilfiger | Sunglasses: Dior Homme at KOK Optica | Phot by Isaiah Stomp No therapy like retail therapy and if you want to find some treasures go to downtown Oranjestad. Its home to a great variety of jewelers and boutiques all over the area and for sure will satisfy even the finest shopper. It’s even possible to find that special item which sold out at home! Do The best activities to do on Aruba The island might be small but don’t think it doesn’t have the options for you to choose and do the most when you visit or if you’re local, give a twist to your days off! Paseo Herencia Mall J.E. Irausquin Boulevard 382A, Noord | +297 586 6533 | paseoherencia.com Whether you’re a visitor or a local Paseo Herencia will always be a present. Located in the hotel area of Palm Beach, the open-air mall offers a good selection of stores and experiences. If you go in the morning for breakfast, your coffee run or at night for shopping and dining, Paseo will have you covered. For shopping, it is always nice to walk around and discover what the stores have to offer. Although small, Paseo has the nicest options for you to shop, going from perfumes and beauty, jewelry and world famous brands to even something to get as a souvenir for your friends back at home. If you decide to go out for dinner, Paseo offers a wide selection of restaurants with Argentinian, Dutch, African, American and Mexican cuisines that will make you feel full of options. They have a daily schedule of live entertainment on their amphitheater that’s worth checking out. My top picks are DLG and Tommy Hilfiger. San Nicolas Art Tour The art scene in the island is more happening than ever and during October the Aruba Art Fair welcomes new artists to showcase their work on the streets and to bring new colors to San Nicolas, at the south side of the island. San Nicolas is like our very own Wynwood District with beautiful murals all over the area, a must see. Cosecha’s lovely director Joanne Dirksz invited me on a tour pre-Art Fair which was ideal for me to learn more about the existent murals and I even got the fortune to talk to an artist working in site preparing for the big reveal the following weekend. I was lucky enough to talk to Elco van den Berg (@iameelco), Mr. Dheo (@mrdheo) and Pariz One (@parizone) about their work-in-progress and was amazed to learn this is all handmade until the last drop of paint. Also, the Museum of Industry is an amazing place to visit and learn more about the island’s economic history. San Nicolas offers you so much life and colors I dare to say your trip to Aruba is not complete without taking a walk through these streets, plus if you’re looking for an Instagram moment, the pictures are going to be out of this world. Pelican Adventures Private Jeep Tour J.E. Irausquin Blvd 232, Noord | +297 587 2307 | pelican-aruba.com When I was going through activities to feature in this guide, there is no doubt that one had to be a Jeep tour. If you’re visiting our island or if you’re a resident it is always amazing to take a day to discover what our natural monuments have to offer and taking a Jeep tour is the best way to be able to see it all in one day. Pelican Adventures has an incredible option if you’re looking for something more private away from the crowds, a private guide in your own Jeep. We started at 9 in the morning heading to the California Lighthouse located at the north end of our island, recently renovated to its original splendor it is a great point to take a view of the north side. The cool part is that from the hill where it is located you can take a look at the blue waters of Arashi Beach all the way to Palm Beach but also if you turn around you can see the dunes and more wild waters that guard the coast. Off to Bushiribana Ruins, an old gold mine. Imposing on its own and located right next to our wild coast as I like to call it, you get to learn a lot about the past economic activities of the island. Local tip: it is a great photography spot for sure. Right next to it there’s the Natural Bridge stop. Mother nature took its toll and it collapsed in 2005 but don’t worry, we have a new small one that you’ll be able to see right there. Also from a distance, you’ll see Andicuri beach which is just 10 minutes away from the parking area and if you’re willing to take a small walk among the rocks you’ll find a beach of crystal clear wild waves. It is a local favorite and my own. Off we go to Arikok National Park, the Jeep tour includes the park entrance fee so it is only a 15-minute drive away. I really enjoyed the drive around back roads. I’m pretty sure you’ll always discover some new sights and roads you’ve never been before and if you’re visiting, you’ll see diversity and get to find out more about the quiet island way of living. Arikok National Park has paved roads, so there’s no need to worry if you’re not an experienced off-roader, roads that took us to Quadirikiri Caves. It was my first time in the caves and where our tour guide, Victor really shined, telling us curious facts about the local language and indigenous occupancy as well as the origins of the local population. The caves have 3 chambers all with easy access so no need to be fearful. You’ll be surprised how amazing they are and for sure one of your best trip pictures will be taken in there cause the main chamber has natural light that enters and create the perfect lighting to show the intricate structure. The cave has its own inhabitants, super friendly bats that are a protected species of the park. But don’t worry, they won’t bother you at all. Taking a back road you’ll pass by the windmills what make a cool contrast with the wilderness of the island to reach out to Seroe Colorado. Local tip: Don’t miss a chance to take a picture at the red anchor, if you go to Aruba and don’t take a picture there, did you really go to Aruba? The road leads you to Baby Beach, always incredible and serene, the local favorite to enjoy with the entire family due to its shallow waters and no waves. It’s the last stop of the tour perfect to cool off with a dip before heading back to Oranjestad. Special Thanks: Photographers David Troeger, Isaiah Stomp & Yerica Benítez. Stylist Ali Hector.
